Ingredients
Scale
- 4 cups fresh blueberries (or frozen, thawed)
- 1 cup granulated sugar (adjust to taste)
- 2 tablespoons lemon juice (freshly squeezed)
- 1 teaspoon lemon zest (optional)
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract (optional)
Instructions
- Prepare the Blueberries: Wash the blueberries thoroughly and remove any stems. If using frozen berries, let them thaw slightly.
- Cook the Ingredients: In a medium saucepan, combine the blueberries, sugar, and lemon juice. Stir well and let sit for 10 minutes to release the juices.
- Simmer the Jam: Place the saucepan over medium heat and bring to a gentle boil, stirring occasionally. Reduce heat to low and let it simmer for 20-25 minutes, stirring frequently until thickened.
- Check for Doneness: To test if the jam is ready, place a small spoonful on a chilled plate. If it thickens and wrinkles slightly when touched, it’s done. If not, cook for a few more minutes.
- Add Final Touches: Remove from heat and stir in lemon zest or vanilla extract if using. Let the jam cool slightly before transferring to jars.
- Store the Jam: Pour the warm jam into sterilized jars, let it cool completely, then seal. Store in the refrigerator for up to 3 weeks or freeze for longer storage.
Notes
- Adjust the sugar based on the sweetness of your blueberries.
- If you prefer a thicker jam, simmer for an additional 5-10 minutes.
- This jam can be frozen for up to 6 months. Thaw in the refrigerator before use.
- For a flavor twist, try adding cinnamon or a splash of balsamic vinegar.
